Nora Elvis

We are very busy, getting ready for the newest arrival to the Elvis family, Nora Elvis. Nora is the cutest puppy ever. She is a bitser. She is 6 months old. We think she has some Labrador and cattle dog in her. She has a pink leash and matching collar. Dad has bought her a kennel and a bed for when she is in the house. Dog bowls and food have also been bought, and now we are waiting for the puppy to arrive. We are adopting her from the animal shelter. She is a stray dog. We will have to teach our Pound Princess her name.

Imogen and Dad go to pick Nora up from the vet where she is having her vaccinations and an operation. She will be very sleepy when she gets home. We have time to eat dinner and get most of the way through the dishes before finally we hear car doors slamming. I race to the front door and wrench it open. Imogen is holding a black puppy. She looks slightly odd holding such a huge puppy. (Nora is going to be a big dog when she is fully grown.) Imogen puts Nora down on the floor and I gingerly pat her head. I am slightly nervous. I don't want to get bitten or anything.

Nora looks around dazed. One minute she had been safely in her cage, the next she was in a car driving to the vets', and now these strange people have taken her to a place she has never seen before.

Sophie appears beside me and cries, "She is so cute!"

"Shh," I scold.

Imogen leads Nora into the family room. Nora immediately settles down on her bed. If she was a cat she probably would take one look and think, "That is a nice bed", and then go sit on the settee. But she is a dog and very intelligent.

I heat Imogen's and Dad's dinner up for them before skidding over to Nora. Her fur is black and she has a white stripe down her front with black spots on it. Her snout is huge and she has big floppy ears.

Suddenly Nora's  head rises and she sniffs. She likes the smell. She can smell Dad's dinner. Nora walks over to him and puts her two front legs on the settee to look into Dad's bowl. Imogen pushes Nora down.

I don't want to do the rest of the dishes. I want to cuddle the puppy. All my fears about her biting me disappear when she looks at me with those big brown puppy eyes.

"Hurry and do the dishes, then you will be able to play with the dog," Mum says. She knows that I want to pet the puppy.

We enjoy petting Nora till bed time. Neither Sophie nor me want to go to bed.

In the morning Imogen and I take Nora outside before breakfast. She meets the neighbours' dog Louie. They have a barking match. I hadn't heard Nora bark before.

A few days later we take Nora for a walk. It is loads of fun.

I love dogs! Do you? I think Nora is the best dog ever!

A Very Soggy Battle

I grab a towel and the cat shampoo before trotting into the laundry. It is bath day. That means that I wash the cats while trying not to get wet myself.

I fill the sink with warm water and march off to find my first victim.

"Meow," Jenny says as I scoop her up from the floor.

I grin evilly and dump her into the sink.

"I don't understand what is going on!" Jenny wails.

I tip cups of water all over her back, completely ignoring her complaints.

"STOP," Jenny screams as I rub shampoo into her fur.

I smile as I rinse the shampoo out from her fur. Nearly done.

"Where is my water going?" Jenny asks as I pull the plug out from the sink. I then haul the cat out of the bath and onto the closed washing machine.

"Stop, that tickles!" Jenny squeals as I rub the towel up and down her back.

"First cat done," I say, dumping Jenny on the floor.

I fill the sink again before walking off to find the next cat.

Sammy is always easy to find. He has two regular hiding spots. Behind the settee or Mum's armchair. I open Mum's bedroom door and head to her chair. There he is, cowering behind it. "Got you," I say, pulling him out.

We march over to the operating room. "In you go," I say gently lowering him into the sink.

"Help!" Sammy screams and grabs the edge of the sink with his claws.

"Get back in there!" I shout, unlatching his claws from the sink.

Sammy reaches his claws out for the next nearest thing. They sink into the towel I had put on top of the washing-machine.

"Stop! Stop!" I cry as he claws his way out of the sink.

Sammy smiles he is winning the battle. With an extra spurt of energy I pull him back down.

"Why are you so mean?" Sammy asks.

Cup after cup of water gets thrown at him.

"Stop! I am dying," the wet animal screams.

I grab my next weapon. The shampoo bottle.

"That stuff smells," Sammy moans as I squirt the shampoo all over him.

A few minutes the animal is clean. I lift him out of the sink and onto the washing-machine. I smile. What a good job I have done. But Sammy isn't giving up.

"OUCH!" I scream as Sammy digs his claws into my chest. But there is no time to spend feeling sorry for myself while there is still one animal left standing.

I find Poppy sitting in Charlotte's wardrobe, looking as grumpy as ever.

"Why do you always bath us and make us smell of shampoo?" Poppy asks. "I way prefer my stink."

I wrinkle my nose at her statement and think of the horrible odour that usually follows her about.

"I way prefer this nice clean smell," I say, waving the cat shampoo bottle in front of her.

Finally the cat is shampooed, rinsed and rubbed sort of dry.

I am done!

When I look in the mirror though I discover that my victory has come with a price. On my neck is a cut from Sammy and my T-shirt is soaked. But the cats look worse than me. They are miserable, soggy balls of fur.

Have you ever bathed a cat?

It's Very Cold!

"It is very warm for this time of year," Mum commented a few days ago.

"We better make the most of the good weather," said Imogen.

We ran outside at morning tea time because it was nice and warm at that time. I played outside without freezing to death and we were so warm we didn't need to wear coats every time we went out.

Then there was a change in the weather.

"Mum, it's VERY COLD out here," said Charlotte as she pegged a T-shirt onto the washing line.

We started to use the gas heater, put extra blankets on the beds, wear big warm coats and sleep with hot water bottles.

"Sammy climbed into my bed this morning," said Mum.

"He must be cold," said Imogen, stroking the cat.

"They all seem to want to sit on people now," said Sophie.

I looked down at Poppy and wondered how she could be cold under all that fur.

I think everybody hopes it will warm up soon.

X kisses, O hugs and letters

To Dear Grandmother Charlotta,

I am writing to tell you about our holiday. The beach house is lovely.

I am sharing a double bed with Susanna. It is very high and I have to take a run up and leap to get on it.

I have two lamps on my bedside table. One of the lamps has a switch. The other one gets lighter the more you touch it. Susanna has one lamp on her bedside table.

My bedside table has a cupboard attached to it. Susanna has a a wardrobe on the other end of the room. We both share a desk and chair.

Susanna and I did some colouring in.

Mum decided that we should go for a walk down to the beach. The beach was huge with lots of sand.

When we got back we had dinner.

I love you so very much.

From a very loving granddaughter, Mary-Rose.

                           XXXXOOO

Dear Mary-Rose,

I like the sound of your bedroom. Can you climb on the bed properly yet?

Have you been in the water? I hope you bring lots of shells home.

Are you enjoying yourself?

I am missing you.

I hope the weather stays good.

Does your house have a garden?

I did some cooking today and made huge biscuits. (It is a new secret recipe.) They are very chocolaty.

Lots of love from Grandmother.

                           XOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

Dear Grandmother Charlotta,

Yes, the house does have a garden. It is all mulch. Mum loves it. There are metal fishes hanging in the trees.

The biscuits sound yummy.

Yes, we did go in the water. Today we went down to the lake again and then to the park. It was fun.

We went home for morning tea and had hot chocolate with marshmallows and ate biscuits. We played some card games while we ate the biscuits (the biscuits that we ate I doubt are half as good as your biscuits.) Irene was on my team.

Dad helped us lower the seats on our bikes. Mum announced it was time for a bike ride. Mum, Susanna, Caroline and Irene sped along. Dad stayed behind and helped me. I am not very good at riding a bike and I kept riding into the gutter. I fell off the bike.

Mum took me to the beach and I made a huge sandcastle.

Dear Mary-Rose,

Our cat Scratchy has had three kittens. We called one Rosie after you. The other two are boys and they are always fighting. Their names are Trouble and Hero.

Trouble is very fluffy. He is light brown with a slightly darker face. Hero is sleeker than Trouble and is mostly dark with light brown socks.

Rosie likes to sit on people. She has a darker brown tip of her tail and dark ears and socks.

I hope you are enjoying yourself,

                                                       Love from Grandmother

Dear Grandmother Charlotta,

Today Dad decided that we should have a look at the canoe that lives in the shed of the holiday house. Dad and Irene dragged the canoe all the way to the beach on its wheels. Caroline and Dad were the first people in the canoe. Dad is teaching her to row. When Irene came back from her rowing lesson she had a big smile on her face.

After Irene had finished her lesson Dad said he and Caroline could take a passenger along. I got to be the passenger. I had to put on a bright yellow life jacket.

Caroline and Dad are good rowers. It was very peaceful in the canoe. Suddenly we felt ourselves rock back and forth in the canoe. One second we were in the canoe and the next we plunged into the cold water. Dad got us out of the water and back into the canoe, and Irene and Susanna pulled us to shore. Irene swam out and found the paddle.

To my dear granddaughter,

It sounds like you are having a very exciting time.

Grandfather and I are wondering if you want  Trouble. Trouble and Hero don't get on well at all. They are always fighting.

Rosie and Trouble are trying to eat King the budgie.

Today I planted a rose bush in the garden. It is going to have pink roses.

Grandfather and I  hope you are coming home soon.

                        XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

Dear Grandmother,

We are coming home tomorrow.

I asked Mum and Dad about having Trouble and after a lot of persuading, they agreed.

I love the sound of the rose bush.

Today we went to a flea market and I bought five dolls. Caroline bought a bracelet. We went to a shop where Susanna bought a little toy dog. Irene went back to the flea market and bought a bracelet like Caroline's.

I can't wait to be home.

Jenny

Jenny is our cat. She is such a story-like cat. All she does is sleep, eat, sleep, eat and if she feels like it, she will curl up on your lap.

Jenny likes to lie down and stretch her chin out on the floor. It looks really uncomfortable but she seems to like it. She sits on anything from the arm of the chair to a shoe box to a bookmark on the floor. She thinks that she can catch a bug through a closed glass sliding door. It doesn't work. She is a bit dim.

Jenny is cross eyed and sometimes tries to thump my legs with her head but I think she gets the wrong image of me. I thinks she sees two of me.

We were watching "The Life of Birds" and Jenny got up from the arm of the chair and hopped onto the organ stool, which was closer to the TV, to investigate.

She kills toy mice for us and in the middle of the night she will start meowing, telling us to come look at the mouse she has killed.

Sammy (one of our other cats) and Jenny fight each other for a small rocking chair, sometimes both hopping on it and we can't tell one cat's paws from the other cat's.

I love Jenny even if she is not very clever.
